EXPLORING COLOR AND INNOVATION IN CULTURAL HERITAGE THROUGH HYPERSPECTRAL IMAGING
Singapore, 14 November 2025
Konica Minolta Sensing Singapore, together with our partner Centasia Co., Ltd., was delighted to participate in the 51st Science and Technology in Thailand (STT51) Congress, held on 12 November 2025 at Chulalongkorn University. Organized by SCICCA, the symposium carried the theme “Color in Cultural Heritage – Bridging Tradition and Innovation,” bringing together researchers, scientists, and professionals to explore how technology continues to enrich the study and preservation of cultural heritage.
Introducing Hyperspectral Imaging in Cultural Heritage
Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) is an advanced, non-destructive imaging technique that captures information across hundreds of spectral bands beyond the visible spectrum. Each pixel in a hyperspectral image contains detailed spectral data, enabling precise identification of materials, pigments, and surface conditions that are invisible to the human eye.
In the field of cultural heritage, HSI has become an invaluable tool for art conservators, museums, and researchers. It enables pigment analysis, material differentiation, and detection of underdrawings or retouchings — providing scientific insights that aid in the preservation and authentication of priceless artworks and artifacts.
Demonstrating Innovation at STT51
Various Specim’s Hyperspectral Imaging solutions, including Specim FX10 and FX17 hyperspectral cameras, were showcased at the STT51 Congress. Attendees also had the opportunity to experience live demonstrations of these hyperspectral imaging solutions during the workshop session. This session illustrated how hyperspectral imaging can reveal subtle information about pigments and materials, enhancing the understanding of an artwork’s composition and conservation needs. Our teams worked closely to engage participants, provide technical insights, and discuss the wide-ranging possibilities of applying hyperspectral imaging in research and preservation.
A heartfelt thank you to all participants and organizers for their enthusiasm and collaboration. Together, we continue to explore how advanced imaging technologies can bridge tradition and innovation, enabling the preservation of cultural heritage for generations to come.
