Printer calibration is an important process in the printing workflow. The aim of calibration is to measure and adjust the color response of the printer to bring out its best optimal color output capability. The International Color Consortium (ICC) defines calibration as the foundation for additional color characterization of printer and profiling.
Calibration is required for all devices in the color managed workflow. To ensure the printer’s color capability is optimized, it is recommended to perform calibration at least once daily. Apart from calibration, density balance is also of equal importance to ensure good quality printouts.
The ICC profile, expressed in CIE L*a*b, contains information needed to translate color data between different color spaces like CMYK and RGB.
Creation of ICC profile for a printer is done by matching a test print result using a calibrator with the original reference file.
Calibrator like the Konica Minolta Auto Scan Spectrophotometer FD-9 can also function as a densitometer. User can easily perform calibration, density balance, color profiling, density measurement, color measurement and even spot color to achieve good color management.
