How To Measure Haze in Transparent Packaging?
In the packaging industry, the presence of haze in transparent packaging such as plastic and glass bottle is undesirable. Their presence reduces clarity of packaging appearance and affect the overall presentation of the product. Haze occurs when impurities in the material or surface condition cause light to scatter. To quantify clarity in transparent packaging, measurement of haze is needed.
Traditionally, measurement of haze was done visually by holding the transparent sample up to a light source to judge its haziness. This method is highly subjective and time consuming. Objective and consistent measurement of haze can be achieved using spectrophotometers.
A reference standard haze value should first be defined and thereafter, user can quantify the amount of haze in the sample using a spectrophotometer to determine if the established standard haze value is achieved.
